Me Phenomenally

This is my contribution to Rebirth of Lisa’s Blogiversary.  I was inspired by Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman” and the post Baby Girl … You Look Fine by Fill Your Own Glass.

Poetry is not something I usually write but for Lisa’s Blogiversary and with Miss Maya as inspiration, I had to give it a try.

Me Phenomenally

Defiantly, my eyes glance

at my still reflection in the mirror.

I glance past the wrinkles and

marks of time adorning my face.

Reflecting back at me, I see

me phenomenally.

The bubbly five year old girl rocking

platinum blonde ringlets.

The painfully shy fifteen year old girl aching

for hair that would lay flat and stick straight.

So she could fit in like other girls.

The excited twenty five year old woman;

hesitantly confident, ready for life’s next adventure.

Embracing naturalness; her white girl afro phase.

The thirty five year old feeling strong and sexy;

as she declares she has finally come into her own.

Her hair long, curly and carefree.

The forty five year old woman with tired eyes

that no longer glisten;

her scars from waging life’s battles.

She seems not able to control her curly hair;

another battle lost.

Defiantly, my eyes glance

at my reflections in the mirror.

Me phenomenally, I reflect back.

Tired, worn, and beaten;

my smile can still light up my eyes and face.

I pause, put on a coat of lipstick and think,

“Baby girl, you look fine.”

  1. I’m thrilled and honored that my post would have in any small way inspired this piece! “Reflecting back at me, I see me phenomenally.” – what a wonderful line, and a wonderful sentiment. I admit on more than one less than perfect day I have used that “mirror” as inspiration and told myself that I do look fine. Well done! Best, Karen

  2. Hey there, I found you via the NaBloPoMo blogroll.

    As part of NaBloPoMo I try to comment on as many participating blogs as I can, and I am also adding participating blogs to my feed reader. So I’m just dropping by to let you know I’ve added your blog to my feedreader, whenever you publish a post I will see it. 🙂

    I have created three bundles on Inoreader so that bloggers can easily visit other participating NaBloPoMo bloggers which you can find here –

    http://www.snoskred.org/2014/11/nablopomo-bundles-final-edition.html

    Your blog is in the second bundle.. I also have a link up going at my place so my readers can find participating blogs which you are more than welcome to add your blog link to.

    Looking forward to seeing your posts. You may see me drop by again during November, but it might be December before I finish my first drop by to blogs if I don’t get faster at leaving comments. 🙂

    Happy NaBloPoMo to you!
